Comments from 6/16/19 Poll - Catastrophic Illness Policies

Many districts are reviewing their methods of covering employees who exceed their contractual maximum sick days due to catastrophic illness or other issues.  Which of the following does your district provide?

Answer Respondent
We offer several of the above, but I was only allowed to select one! We also offer the option to purchase extra disability insurance beyond what our State already provides, and we provide for catastrophic leaves of absence for up to one month with medical insurance remaining in effect. Teachers never pay for substitutes! Anonymous
The teachers may also purchase a disability policy on their own. Daily wages will be docked once their sick leave is used up. Our district reviews and follows the Family Medical Leave Act for health considerations requiring extended leave (maturity/paternity etc.) Anonymous
It's not so much a common bank of sick days as it is we are allowed to donate our days to a specific employee if we choose. Anonymous
Our teachers' union has a sick bank. Our current superintendent did not want our administrator's union to have a sick bank (it was in our contract we could have one). We started it again, adding 3 days each to the sick bank. Anonymous
Also, teachers may donate when a person is in need. We do not maintain a sick bank. Anonymous
Despite requests to put something in place. Anonymous
If those days run out, I don't know! Anonymous
The contract provides 70% of salary for up to two years of illness. Anonymous
We also have a common bank of sick days. Anonymous
