I was wondering what changes districts are making to their special education programs to accommodate the increased technology components of common core.

Hi Lorianne,

I have seen districts purchasing more tablets and apps that take into consideration the needs of many learners in order to get them more comfortable with using technology, in particular smaller applications (apps) that can be used for forming ideas. Apps like note takers and mind mappers. iPads seem to be very popular with Special Education departments as are Android tablets.

Hi Blanca,

I am concerned that in the districts that I have been involved with, the tech departments do not seem to be thinking about the special needs students, as they make decisions about the appropriate technology for the PARCC assessments. I am afraid they are going to purchase chromebooks for the tests, as they are inexpensive, but without thinking about accessibility for special needs. Do you think there is anything we can do to spark discussion of this issue here on school leadership?
