Apple Inc. is announcing a new iBooks 2 for the iPad which provides access to interactive textbooks published by the big three publishing companies, Pearson, Houghton Mifflin and McGraw Hill.  Most interactive textbooks will be priced at $14.99 or less.  Great savings for school districts.  More content from the event is available on mashable.com and macrumors.com.
Also, a new iBooks Author allows students and teachers to create their own content or textbooks.  This will help schools move into digital backpack environment in which digital devices are integrated with digital content customized for students by grade level, subject areas, and personal needs?

I was excited following this morning's iBooks / iBook Author keynote, especially after previewing the hands-on photos and video, however, I would like to see Apple open up the iBooks reader to other platforms.  Schools that use Android-based devices, and even those with 1:1 PC or Mac laptop programs (such as ours) are left in the dark on this otherwise great initiative.  Similar to the way Adobe .PDF files are compatible on all platforms, Apple's "iBook" format should be as well.
