Multiple independent variables are part of the doctoral degree process and outcome. In the view of this writer, the most critical independent variable is single-minded perseverance that focuses on the horizon line  and transcends all challenges, including accusations designed to weaken the sojurner. Perseverance is a bulldozer that clears the road. The doctoral journey is like running a marathon. We reach a wall and we press on beyond the wall.

As one of John Gallagher's cohort members, I second his opinion that we did and do ask the question, "Am I smart enough?"  

 

Andrea YOU ARE! Stick to it and 'touch' the dissertation everyday. You will get stuck and fustrated, but that's the process - embrace it, don't hate it. I know, easier said than done.

WOW!!!! Congratulations! It is intense and I do laugh at myself often. I decided to obtain a doctoral degree when I was 25 attending Lesley College for my BS in education. I am so happy that you were able to describe why this endeavor is important. I am driven to contribute to the field of educational leadership, love working with students and teachers and feel that continuing my own education is demonstrating my own belief in those gifts education affords us. It must be an amazing feeling to know you have competed this monumental task. What is the title of your dissertation? Obviously I am reading many as they seem to help establish the direction I should go with my research. Thank you for the comments.

I completed my dissertation defense in June of 2009. It is an accomplishment that is difficult to put into words, because not many people reach this goal. Remember, this is an attainable goal and only one worth completing if you will be a contributor to our field. If you are seeking a title, you may want to reconsider, as this type of work is quite intense, but extremely rewarding. Don't let anyone tell you that you are not smart enough, don't know SPSS, or have not read enough! You will do all of that and when you do, you will surprise yourself! It is like training for the olympics of the mind, body and soul! I submitted all of my paperwork on April 8, 2011 for publication and finally the entire process is completed! The goal for me now is to use this degree to make a difference in our field, and for the betterment of student achievement-that is why the journey is well worth the effort! You can do it and you will do it--work on your work everyday--be serious about it, but don't forget to keep your sense of humor-you will need that too!!! It is not about luck, but passion and the drive!

It is nice to know that with all of the other responsibilities and with persistence, this can be accomplished. It is so interesting that you have an art education  background, in that, one of my favorite professors also came from that background. I believe it must provide a colorful lens, depth and perspectives not otherwise examined. Thank you for the comment.

I remember how I felt before I started the program - "Am I worthy?", "Am I smart enough?"

When I began the Ed.D. at Dowling College, I was part of a very supportive cohort (I'm sure we can all say that!)

When I started the dissertation process, I proved to myself that with three children and a supportive wife at home, job responsibilities, and obtaining tenure, I could balance all of these important things to get the project done.

For me the process was more to prove to myself that I could do it. I'm glad I did.

My topic didn't change much and the faculty was very supportive as well. I felt a bit "special" in that I was the only one with a focus on arts education.

Currently I am writing my dissertation. The whole process is overwhelming, however, the biggest challenge seems to be in my ability to believe that I am actually smart enough to accomplish this lifetime goal. It is tough to remain balanced. The topic has changed a few times and currently I am working from a theoretical framework that was developed by one of my professors. It will be interesting to hear form others going through the process.
