X and the City: “Arithmetic” Applied to Everyday Life
Dr. John Adam, Professor, Department of Mathematics, Old Dominion University
Thursday, October 17, 7:30-9:00 PM
Monroe Lecture Center
California Avenue, South Campus
We can use elementary mathematics to explore a wide range of entertaining questions about urban life. These include questions such as the following. How did Princess Dido use the hide of an ox to found the city of Carthage (according to legend)? How do you estimate the number of dental or doctor's offices, gas stations, restaurants, or movie theaters in a city of a given size? How can mathematics be used to understand and even maximize traffic flow through tunnels? What are ‘road-bows’ and rain circles? Why do so-called ‘Taxi-Cab circles’ look like squares? And why is Pi equal to four in the city? Finally, what is the likelihood that your city will be hit by an asteroid?
Join us for this witty look at math! There will be a book signing following the talk.

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource
Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and
other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching
practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
