It is important to expose kids to the wide range of possibilities in STEM. Middle Schoolers benefit from work based learning experiences but it can challenging for industry to open their doors to offer these experiences. Are you successful in wiring work based learning experiences for your middle schoolers? Perhaps guest lectures? Field trips?
In STEMgineeringAcademy.org we focus on exposure to a range of STEM and engineering careers. Each activity explores a different STEM topic and career. Most of the activities have short videos with a younger/diverse spokesperson talking about what they do and the background required to get into the field. For example, in the "Optimum Potato Chip" we share a video with a young female Food Scientist. In WuGGs to the Rescue where kids design and build a shoe that withstands water and wear we share a video with a young hispanic female materials engineer from NASA.
