Spanish Language Awareness for Educators

Short Courses for Teachers, Administrators, Coaches, Counselors, Nurses, and School Staff

Wouldn't it be a powerful enhancement of your professional skills to be able to communicate more effectively with parents and students whose primary language is Spanish? Given the rapidly growing number of Spanish-speaking families and children on Long Island and NYSED’s increasing requirements for ESL-related expertise, it is crucial that non-Spanish-speaking educators develop stronger knowledge of Spanish language and culture.

Stony Brook University's School of Professional Development is pleased to offer a 3-course sequence designed to enhance educators' understanding of the language and culture of Spanish-speaking students and families. Participants will learn the basic structures of Spanish Language and will learn vocabulary and phrases that are particularly relevant to K-12 school contexts.

The entire curriculum is covered in three 15-16 hour courses. The first course, The School and Its People, will be offered either on the Stony Brook University campus or at Stony Brook's Manhattan location.

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
