School Leadership Symposium (SLS) 2013

Location: Zug, Switzerland

This largest international conference for school effectiveness, school improvement, and school management in the German speaking countries is hosted by the Institute for the Management and Economics of Education, University of Teacher Education Central Switzerland (PHZ), Zug, in cooperation with Carl Link – a brand of Wolters Kluwer Germany, the Forum Education in Switzerland and the Associations of School Leadership in Switzerland and Germany, and supported by many other partners.

The conference theme is

Transforming Challenges into Opportunities

In the last decades, school leaders face new tasks and challenges. Changes in the educational system have a particularly strong direct impact on the school leaders' roles. But schools, and consequently the pressures and expectations on school leaders, also change as a result of more subtle and indirect forces in society – social, political and economic changes – that are gathering pace across the world as the speed of international development increasingly reflects global factors. At the same time many of the challenges school leaders are facing provide opportunities for improving the quality of education.

The School Leadership Symposium 2013 thematically refers to the important areas of school leadership:

-        Classroom Development - Improving Teaching and Instruction: New findings of research into teaching and learning, innovative teaching methods, competence orientation

-        Staff Developoment – Human Resource Management: Dealing with difficult situations in personnel management, systematic personnel management, supporting teacher cooperation

-        Organisation Development: Knowledge management in innovative organisations, school development meeting contemporary demands

-        Quality Management: Benefits and risks of external evaluation/school inspection, quality management systems put to the test

-        System Leadership: Opportunities of cooperation between formal and informal (edu) partners, networked learning communities, collaboration within and between schools

Besides, there will be cross-cutting issues:

-        Diversity Management: Diversity as a chance, heterogeneity and what it means for school leadership

-        Health: Job demands and pressures in school and school leadership, health risks and resilience factors, resources for school leadership

-        Failing Schools: School development in difficult circumstances, school turnaround from the education authority’s perspective, experiences with schools facing extreme difficulties

-        Professionalisation of School Leaders: Innovative learning arrangements in PD, impact of PD, school leadership competencies

The topics are presented in key note speeches, paper presentations (30-minutes) and worked on in a practice-oriented way in (90- and 180-minute) workshops.
