Elementary Mathematics Academy presented by Lawrence Farrell

Program: Professional Development

Dates: 7/23/2018 to 7/27/2018

Teachers must understand the mathematics they are responsible for teaching and more! This elementary math institute is intended to inform elementary educators in the mathematical principles of “teaching good math” with the mathematical practices of the Common Core as the pedagogical window. Choices made in curriculum and lesson implementation are based on this core knowledge. Each session will study one of the domains of the Common Core and will explore, educate and prepare teachers through the understanding of mathematics beyond the procedural. These sessions are based strictly on the content standards, models and suggestions made in the progression documents written by the writers of Common Core mathematics. This will be a multi-session process. All teachers will be required to attend all the sessions so that the coherency of the common core is upheld. The sessions will be instructional and engaging as we model the mathematical practices of the Common Core. At completion, BOCES will offer a certificate of completion to all participants. Session 1 – Introduction, Numbers in Base 10 Session 2 – Fractions Session 3 – Counting and Cardinality/Operations and Operations and Algebraic Thinking Session 4 – Geometric Measurement/Geometry Session 5 – Categorical Data/Measurement and Data Flyer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1R8RMFYlotkScb2Ycra_IHGP3QtUb5nEQ/v...

Statistics for Algebra 2 Teachers Day 1 - Probability and Modeling ...

Program: Professional Development

Dates: 7/23/2018

If you feel overwhelmed by the thought of having to teach the more rigorous statistical topics of the CCLS, this is the workshop for you. We will work through the probability, statistics, inferences, and drawing of conclusions that you will need to be able to teach to your students. Probability and statistics begin in 6th grade, and continue through Pre-Calculus with a hiatus in Geometry. We will use the graphing calculator as an important tool. When you leave this workshop, you will feel confident in your ability to teach the standards to your students. This is a 2-part series. Ideally, participants will be able to attend both parts, but are not required to. **Please register separately for each session.** Day 1: Probability and Modeling Data Distributions – Monday, July 23, 2018 In this session we will briefly review the probability that the students learned in 6th grade through Algebra 1. We will then build on the probability learned using two-way tables and Venn diagrams. We will look at conditional probability, independence and the rules for probability. Next, we will expand on what was learned about data distributions, using a curve to model data, and Normal Distributions. To cap the day we will look at different types of statistical studies. Please bring a graphing calculator. Flyer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1R94QZg6y16vpDeKtlwXVXXTIexW3CO8Y/v...

What Administrators Need to Know In Addressing the Impact of ADHD i...

Program: Professional Development

Dates: 7/24/2018

ADHD affects approximately 11% of school-age children (CDC 11/13) A significant percentage of children who have ADHD / Executive Function Challenges are educated in the mainstream classroom. Many of these students do not receive direct services such as resource room or skills training to address or remediate weaknesses in their attention regulation and executive function skills. Educators and Related Service Providers are often not taught how to understand the basis for the struggles students with ADHD face as they approach learning and behaving in the classroom. Specific education and strategies are needed to allow proper intervention and collaboration with educators and parents. This seminar draws on Cindy's clinical expertise of working with parents, teachers and other support professionals as she brings to life how to bridge the gap between theory/research and actual implementation to address learning and behavior challenges in school. Engagement Through Cooperative Strategies presented by Mindy LiBassi

Program: Professional Development

Dates: 8/6/2018

New

Cooperative Learning is NOT group work. More often than not, people think that what they are implementing is cooperative learning, when, in fact, it is merely group work. Studies show that group work is NOT an effective tool for instruction. BUT, true Cooperative Learning is one of the most effective ways to increase student engagement, participation, understanding, and achievement. In addition to the core curricula, schools have to teach the “soft” skills of communicating and working cooperatively. Too often cooperative learning leaves some students doing all the work and others doing nothing. Come learn how to incorporate engagement strategies that will have all students participating and being responsible to the group. These strategies can be used in any subject area at any grade level. We will learn and utilize the strategies across multiple disciplines and grade levels. Please bring lessons you would like to make more interactive.
