eSchool News highlights five new education grants you don’t want to miss this month

^[1]School funding difficulties show no sign of abating, and school budgets are stretched to the limit. Many educators and administrators rely on school grants to fund important projects and opportunities for students.

During the beginning of every month, the editors of eSchool News compile a list of the most current education grants expiring soon—from STEM opportunities to science writing. You don’t want to miss out on these school funding opportunities for teachers, students, parents, and administrators!

1. Win up to $75K for STEM

The American Honda Foundation engages in grant making that reflects the basic tenets, beliefs and philosophies of Honda companies, which are characterized by the following qualities: imaginative, creative, youthful, forward-thinking, scientific, humanistic and innovative. We support youth education with a specific focus on the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects in addition to the environment. Deadline: November 1st, 2013. 2. Win up to $50K for science writing

The National Association of Science Writers invites proposals from individuals or groups to apply for grants ranging from $1,000 to $50,000 for projects and programs that are designed to help science writers in their professional lives and/or to benefit the field of science writing. Proposals can serve non-members as well as members. We encourage creative thinking, thus the guidelines for these proposals are consciously broad. Deadline: November 15th, 2013. 3. Five awards of $4,500 for STEM educators

This award recognizes excellence and innovation in the field of STEM education at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. A total of 5 awardees will be selected annually. Each awardee will receive up to $1,500 to cover travel expenses to attend the NSTA national conference and be part of a STEM share-a-thon workshop, a $1,000 monetary gift, and a $2000 certificate for Pasco Scientific products. Deadline: November 30th, 2013. 4. $20K for science teachers

The challenge invites middle and high school science teachers (grades 6–12) in the United States and Canada (with special attention to urban and underrepresented groups) to illustrate replicable approaches to science lab instruction utilizing limited school and laboratory resources. Teachers and schools submitting top entries will receive additional laboratory tools, resources, and rich professional development opportunities. Deadline: December 20th, 2013. 5. Up to $25K for middle school STEM

The Christopher Columbus Awards is a national, community-based science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program for middle school students. The program challenges the students to work in teams of three to four, with an adult coach, to identify a problem in their community and apply the scientific method to create an innovative solution to that problem. Deadline: February 3rd, 2014.
