New ChatGPT feature that "teaches?"

🚨 Our Report

Earlier this month, rumors came out that OpenAI was launching a new “Study Mode.” Turns out those rumors were true: Study Mode is a built-in “learning tool” within ChatGPT, designed for students to help them “work through problems step by step instead of just getting an answer.” The idea is to encourage students to develop critical thinking skills, rather than just relying on ChatGPT to give them answers (Anthropic launched a similar tool in April, called “Learning Mode”).

🔓 Key Points

  • With Study Mode enabled, ChatGPT will give quizzes, “hints and self-reflection prompts,” and responses that are organized “into sections that highlight the key connections between topics.”

  • The feature is powered by “custom system instructions”—created with the help of teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts—so OpenAI can learn from real student feedback and make the tool more personalized.

  • Despite its good intentions, there is skepticism surrounding how effective this tool will be, as currently, there are no parent or teacher admin controls, meaning students can switch into the regular ChatGPT to get answers.

🔐 Relevance

When ChatGPT first launched, many schools banned it, fearing it would prevent students from using their brains—and studies have actually proven this to be the case. A research paper published just last month shows that students who used ChatGPT to write essays showed lower brain activity compared to those who used Google. Despite this, educators have reluctantly realized that tools like ChatGPT aren’t going anywhere and have started to embrace AI as a tool rather than a hindrance. They’re hopeful that this newest addition from OpenAI should encourage students to use their brains (well, committed ones, at least!) rather than rely solely on AI.

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
