Grief education will be mandated for New Jersey public-school eighth- through 12th-graders, making the state the likely first to mandate lessons about grieving. Passed unanimously by lawmakers, the requirement was prompted by the increased awareness about trauma and grief amid the COVID-19 pandemic and calls for the state Board of Education to develop standards for implementing the instruction as part of the Student Learning Standards in Comprehensive Health and Physical Education.
