Motivated and Responsible Students:

How Autonomy-Supportive Schools Make it Happen

Joan R. Fretz, Presenter

Join us for a fascinating look at how supporting choice, competence and relatedness in the classroom will foster self-motivated and responsible behavior by students.  This one-day course introduces participants to Self-Determination, Invitational and Growth Mindset theories of motivation and the keys to creating the conditions that invite student effort, success and cooperation.

Help your school to create an intentionally supportive and motivating environment.  Participants will learn how teachers can:

  • ·       foster intrinsic motivation by providing opportunities for autonomy, competence and relatedness in their planning, instruction and classroom environment.
  • ·       avoid using extrinsic controls and rewards that actually decrease motivation and performance.
  • ·       help students develop a growth mindset with which they value effort, crave challenge and persist in the face of obstacles.
  • ·       invite students to participate in activities that are important, but not necessarily motivating.
  • ·       use strategies that helps students develop a positive self-concept and important social skills like perspective taking, decision making and self management
  • ·       help students realize their potential and enjoy making positive contributions.

The course includes video interviews with high school students who identify the teaching behaviors that helped, as well as hindered their successful turnaround in school.  Each behavior is linked with a component of the Danielson Framework for Effective Teaching.

Most teachers underestimate the tremendous influence they have over their students' self-concept and choice of behavior.  Come learn how you can successfully address school climate, academic achievement and student motivation through the intentional practice of school adults.

This course is recommended for all school administrators, teachers, social workers, guidance counselors, and school psychologists.

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
