The Long Island Network of Centers (LINC) has received funding through the Teaching is the Core Grant. We are offering various professional development opportunities to help support the Common Core. Below is information of two events for Algebra instructors.

This free full day workshop will focus on leveraging instructional strategies for student success on the Algebra Regents. Presenter, Nanci Smith, has been a national and international consultant for thirteen years, and is part of the Common Core and Differentiated Instruction cadres of ASCD.

Common Core Standards require teachers of mathematics to embrace new ways of teaching as it relates to the way students learn. This one-day training is designed to support teachers, who are seeking a clearer understanding of the demands of the Common Core State Standards in Algebra. Included in our time together will be:

• The implications of the “mathematical shifts” as they relate to decision making in the classroom;
• Developing mathematicians in the classroom through the Standards for Mathematical Practice;
• The balance of conceptual understanding and skills;
• Using modeling as it is woven throughout the Standards;
• Hands-on activities to use in class;
• Integrating the NYS modules;
• Discussion and collaboration with colleagues throughout the county.
As we near the first Common Core test in Algebra, the impact and importance of the shifts and changes required to meet the standards is becoming more essential. Come spend the day with us to explore the implications of the Common Core State Standards in Algebra.

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
