Let’s Get Smart about Gangs
During the past year, many communities throughout Long Island have experienced the impact of having gangs in their communities target violence against the most vulnerable population, children. How do we collectively begin to create models of success in our schools, community based organizations and neighborhoods focused on gang prevention and pragmatic solutions.
This illustrious panel of experts in the space of gang prevention will begin to dissect the challenges and opportunities communities face to effectively address the issue with proven strategies and community engagement.

Family Engagement: Using your most valuable resource
Families are an important part of a child's development. In this session you will learn the value of family engagement and see the role culture plays in communication with families. As well as, understand how the "joining" process can improve outcomes.
Stand Up
Whether in the school, online or in your neighborhood, bullying can have a detrimental effect on the healthy development of a child. In this workshop you will learn how the qualities of a good mentor, creating safe spaces and preventing bullying before it starts can create cultures of zero tolerance in your mentoring program and can impact how a child navigates the bullying.

Can Netflix Truly Influence a Young Person’s Emotional State?
In the past year, Netflix programing “13 Reasons Why” has brought the realities of suicide in adolescence into the social conversation once again. As schools, parents and mentors navigate their relationships with the young people in their life, they need to understand the signs of isolation, and loneliness youth experience as they engage in a world where social media post, looking good, and hiding your authentic self is part of the mask used to evade their despair. Learn the signs and techniques you will need to have in order to best support the youth you engage with.
The Hidden Population: Supporting Undocumented Children or Mixed Status Families
A panel of experts that work with undocumented youth and or mixed status families share their key learnings of navigating the social, emotional and academic impact this can have on the youth you are working with. They will provide tips on key questions, conversations and realities children and their families face and how to best support the youth you are engaged with.

Merging the Crossroads of Policy and Community Action to Make a Difference
This illustrious panel of all locally elected female officials from throughout Long Island will discuss the key challenges that youth in their communities are facing as well as the strategies and policies that their offices are seeking to implement in partnership with key community stakeholder that will support the healthy academic, social and emotional development of the children in their districts.

In her new role she has a long list of challenges to contend with. Hear her vision for the children in Nassau County and how she believes policy and community action can work in partnership to propel the change needed to create healthy thriving communities. Participants will have a chance to ask questions and explore ideas with Ms. Curran.
