Leading for Equity and Social Justice
The Long Island Consortium for Excellence and Equity (LICEE)

Throughout our country, and in our area, there exist great individual public schools, inspiring and dedicated teachers, and innovative and committed educational leaders. Dr. Jarvis will discuss the work that the Penn Excellence & Equity Consortia have done over the past twelve years to assist school districts and their communities in NY, PA, NJ and DE in continually reaching to improve the quality and depth of educational learning experiences for each and every one of their students, that reflect districts’ commitment to excellence, continuous innovation and improvement, and equity in opportunity for all students in policy and practice.

The Consortia serve as a resource for school district superintendents and their leadership teams for taking a pro-active social justice and equity leadership role in examining and refining policies and practices that will significantly improve the academic performance of their underperforming students, and close their observed opportunity and achievement gaps.

Our discussion will focus on the work that our Long Island Consortium for Excellence and Equity (LICEE) is doing to help their systems deal with shifting demographics and the equity issues that arise with increased racial and ethnic diversity, income disparity and a larger population of English Language Learners in our schools and communities. School district leaders from Nassau County that have participated with LICEE will share the work that they are doing in their districts to create equity in opportunity for all students.

LICEE has worked intensively over past five years to address learning and leadership challenges in our increasingly diverse suburban communities. The focus of the work has revolved around inter-district collaboration and shared learning for continuous improvement in closing observed preparation, opportunity, expectation and achievement gaps.

Dr. Robert L. Jarvis is Director of K-12 Outreach and Director of Equity Leadership Initiatives in the Penn Center for Educational Leadership in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. The Leadership for Excellence & Equity Initiatives provide high quality professional learning experiences for students, teachers, counselors, principals, central office administrators, school boards, and parents/community representatives.

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
