LI SELF has arranged for a FREE forum discussion with a representative from the NY State Education Department to review implementation practices and questions about the Dignity Act.
Since the inception of New York State's Dignity Act in July 2012, there has been much confusion as to how public schools should be meeting the many mandates that are attached to it. Staff training, student curriculum, reporting of violations, and dealing with the aftermath of reported incidents has created confusion and may be leading districts to err on the side of inaction, choose ineffective interventions, or create potential liability situations.

Participants in this forum will be able to:
- Review Dignity Act language regarding definitions, mandates, and procedures
- Share what is going on in their home districts with regards to meeting Dignity Act mandates
- Share creative interventions in use in their home schools/districts in dealing with Dignity Act related incidents
- Learn about the use of restorative justice practices for dealing with Dignity Act-related disciplinary incidents
- Share practices regarding reaching out to parents to educate them on Dignity Act information
- Share practices followed in investigating reported incidents
- Discuss criteria for reporting Dignity Act violations on annual reporting form

About the Presenters:
Dorothy Ahl, M.S., Ed.S., is a New York State Certified School Psychologist. She has worked as a School Psychologist in Massapequa since 1999. Before that she spent 15 years as a special education teacher in both Massapequa and Deer Park. She is a certified Dignity Act instructor for the new 6 hour certification requirement, and is the Co-chairperson of LI SELF.
David Bryant, from the New York State Department of Education will be calling in from Albany to take questions, and listen to comments and concerns

From the Long Island Expressway (LIE):
Exit the LIE at exit 50, Bagatelle Road. Drive South on Bagatelle Road for approximately 2 miles to Lee Avenue. Turn left onto Lee Avenue (Blinking Red Light). The school is on the corner of Lee Avenue and Bagatelle Road.
From Southern State Parkway:
Exit the Southern State Parkway at exit 36 North. Travel approximately 3 miles. Follow sign which reads, "To Long Island Avenue - South 18th Street." Make a left. Follow over the tracks until it turns into North 18th Street. Continue until the end, which is Lee Avenue. Make a left onto Lee Avenue. Go approximately 1/8 mile. The school is on the right.

Enter the second door on the side of the school for the Computer Lab, Resource Library, Suffolk's Edge Teacher Center and the offices of the Division of Instructional Support Services.
