Why Teachers Should NOT Share Their Phone Number With Students

I stumbled across this the other day on We Are Teachers, and found it to be amusing enough to be worth sharing. We’ve all seen the awesome autocorrect posts that show how sometimes technology bites back at us a bit (I think by now we’ve probably all fallen victim to being unnecessarily or incorrectly autocorrected by our dear friend Siri or her equivalent). While funny and potentially horrifying to those accidentally texting improper words, those can often be attributed to some human error and occasionally overzealous technology (Side note: Dear Siri, we’re and were are two different words, and I use them both, often).

Another type of human error that may cause horrifying text messages is your number getting into the wrong hands – ie, your students’ hands. Check out five amazing texts from students that will help remind you why sharing your phone number with students can be 100% the wrong thing to do. There are lots of anonymous messaging services that will work great in your classroom – put them to use! (And enjoy these classic texts below).

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and

other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching

practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
