Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County - 2013 ANNUAL ARTS COMPETITION

2013 ANNUAL ARTS COMPETITION

The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County, in cooperation with the

Nassau County Anti-Bias Crime Task Force and the Nassau County Commission on Human Rights, invites middle and high school students to participate in our annual Literature, Art, Music, and Multi-Media Arts Competition.

Nassau County Anti-Bias Crime Task Force Nassau County Commission on Human Rights

Theme: The theme of this year’s competition is Creating Bias Free Schools: Dignity for All

Starting July 1, 2012 New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act (The Dignity Act) takes effect. The goal of the Dignity Act is to create a safe and supportive school climate where students can learn without fear of prejudice or bullying. The Dignity Act covers all be- havior on school property: athletic fields, playgrounds, parking lots, school buildings and school buses as well as at school sponsored events or activities.

Objective: To present in a creative fashion a vision of bias-free school where diversity and respect are promoted and valued by everyone.

Do you feel you are treated with dignity, and do you treat others with respect? How does your school promote an environment free from prejudice? What are the advantages to learning in a bias-free school? Can you express your feelings about these issues through poetry, artwork, music or a short multi-media presentation?
