eSchool News highlights four new education grants for January

january-grants[1]School funding difficulties show no sign of abating this January, and school budgets are stretched to the limit. Many educators and administrators rely on school grants to fund important projects and opportunities for students.

During the beginning of every month, the editors of eSchool News compile a list of the most current education grants expiring soon–from a focus on STEM education to a new way to teach journalism. Professional development for STEM teachers

The Siemens STEM Academy offers two one-of-a-kind, all-expenses-paid professional development opportunities that provide unique experiences to middle and high school teachers from across the country looking to bolster STEM learning and gain pragmatic skills that they can translate back into the classroom.

Up to $2M for STEM education

The Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program supports projects that build understandings of best practice factors, contexts and processes contributing to students’ motivation, participation, enhanced interest in and capabilities to successfully pursue STEM and/or STEM cognate domain intensive education programs and careers. ITEST seeks to ensure a high-quality STEM workforce that can meet U.S. technology needs.

$10K for solving real-world problems

The InvenTeam initiative, created by the Lemelson-MIT Program, offers an unparalleled opportunity for high school students to cultivate their creativity and experience invention. InvenTeams are teams of high school students, teachers, and mentors that receive grants up to $10,000 each to invent technological solutions to real-world problems. Each InvenTeam chooses its own problem to solve.

$1 million to revolutionize journalism education

The goal of the $1M Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education is to hack the journalism curriculum using customized versions of the teaching hospital model. The fund supports universities to partner with news organizations, and explore new ways of providing information to their local communities. Winners receive up to $35,000 in micro-grants to support live, local news experiments. Winners can then compete to win up to $100,000 in additional grand prizes for best project and evaluation.

Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and
