Call for Papers - Teacher Observation: formative professional growth strengthening teacher effectiveness

Call for Papers

Global Education Review, an on-line open-access journal is inviting authors to submit manuscripts for an issue scheduled for publication September 1, 2014. If you are working on or have completed an original study not previously published on the topic of Teacher Observation: formative professional growth strengthening teacher effectiveness that you would consider submitting to GER, please send an abstract in response to this message. Please put Global Education Review in the subject line.

Teacher observation has long been accepted as an avenue to provide individualized professional development to strengthen and enhance professional practice.  Too often, however, teacher observation and teacher evaluation are terms used interchangeably therefore, clouding the true purpose of teacher observation.  If one accepts that the purpose of teacher observation is to improve instructional effectiveness through analysis, self-reflection, and recommendation in a cooperative professional atmosphere between teacher and supervisor (observer), then the supervisor (observer) must create a forum for the sharing of ideas, experience, and expertise, in a non-threatening, supportive atmosphere. Yet the reality of the observation process is quite the contrary. In many school systems, the teacher’s annual evaluation is based on observations therefore changing the nature of the observation process from formative to evaluative. Thus, in this theme issue, we seek to understand the factors that enable or prevent the successful implementation of an effective teacher observation process both nationally and internationally. We also seek to present factors and interventions that have been identified as enhancing the teacher observation process as a tool to improve teacher effectiveness, ultimately leading to improved student achievement.

GER is published in thematic issues with a global focus. For this issue on teacher observation, we are seeking articles representing policy and practices in different countries around the world. Submissions are due September 1, 2013.

As a scholarly journal, all submissions are subject to masked peer review. Turnaround time will be about one month, so as an author you will be made aware of the status of your manuscript in what we hope you will consider in a timely manner.

Copyright for articles published in Global Education Review is retained by the authors, with first publication rights granted to the journal.  Articles are free to use immediately as long as it is not for another journal.

Please send abstracts to:

This is an extremely important topic.  As we all know, the state has moved teacher observation from the formative professional development process it should be to the evaluation process.  We are very interested in collecting research in this area.  If you know of anyone who is doing research in this area, please pass this on!
