A Network Connecting School Leaders From Around The Globe
Professional Development Program
An Introduction to Professional Capital
Date: Friday, March 11, 2016
Time: 8:30am – 11:30am
Location: Western Suffolk BOCES
Research work by Andy Hargreaves and Michael Fullan indicates that schools that focus solely
on developing the individual skills of its teachers are not as successful as those that develop
the “professional capital”.
An important ingredient is the development of “social capital”; the patterns of interactions
among teachers and between and among teachers and administrators. This social capital has a
multiplier effect that makes real differences in student achievement and professional morale.
This half-day workshop introduces the theory behind this important work. Audience includes
all school leaders who are beginning to explore this concept.
A full day follow up session has been scheduled for May 2nd for those wishing to explore this
topic in more detail.
Michael Keany retired after 34 years in public education. During that period he served as a
science teacher, assistant principal, middle school principal and high school principal. Mr. Keany has also served for 12 years on the South Huntington Board of Education, 11 of those as Vice President. He has taught at three metropolitan area colleges. He served as President of the Nassau County North Shore High School Principals’ Association and is an elected member of the National Headmasters Association. Mr. Keany was chosen as the Nassau County Administrator of the Year.
Most recently, Mr. Keany has been appointed to the School Building Leader Advisory Assessment
Committee that had responsibility for the creation of the new assessment tools for certifying school
administrators in New York.
He also served on the Staff Committee for the Blue Ribbon Commission on Youth Leadership chaired by Former NY Chancellor Carl Hayden. Most recently he is a participant in a select cohort of educators being trained by LCI to be certified MPPR coaches for principals.
Mr. Keany was selected by Nassau BOCES as one of the 14 Most Influential People in Education on Long Island. He has provided consulting help to over 80 LI school districts.

Mentors.net - a Professional Development Resource
Mentors.net was founded in 1995 as a professional development resource for school administrators leading new teacher induction programs. It soon evolved into a destination where both new and student teachers could reflect on their teaching experiences. Now, nearly thirty years later, Mentors.net has taken on a new direction—serving as a platform for beginning teachers, preservice educators, and
other professionals to share their insights and experiences from the early years of teaching, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence. We invite you to contribute by sharing your experiences in the form of a journal article, story, reflection, or timely tips, especially on how you incorporate AI into your teaching
practice. Submissions may range from a 500-word personal reflection to a 2,000-word article with formal citations.
