LISLC's Assessment Center - Selecting and Developing the 21st Century Principal

The LI School Leadership Center’s Assessment Center has proven to be a big success. Since its inception in 2006, all available opportunities for candidates have been “sold-out” before the start of the school. Many superintendents have expressed their appreciation for the service which provides a unique professional growth opportunity for administrators. Many aspiring administrators who have participated have expressed their positive reaction to the depth and professionalism of the experience. The LI School Leadership Center (LISLC) was honored when it was chosen by NASSP to be the host agency for the new Selecting and Developing 21st Century Principals Assessment Center. Although this highly respected NASSP program is extremely popular in many other states, the LISLC is the only site in New York State.

The program has become so popular that an expansion is planned for the 2008-09 school year.

The Center is modeled on the well-researched and successful NASSP model, Selecting and Developing the 21st Century Principal. Initial funding in 2006 for the Assessment Center was generously provided by the three LI BOCES, by the LIRSSC, and by funds obtained through the Wallace Foundation. The Center has been endorsed in concept by many of the educational and professional administrative organizations on LI. Although developed by NASSP, it has been designed to be applicable to all levels of principals (elementary, middle and high school.)

This contemporary assessment helps identify and/or develop effective school leaders. It is designed to measure leadership potential by diagnosing the behavioral strengths and development needs of prospective and practicing principals in skills identified as critical for success in the principalship. Participants engage in a series of authentic, interrelated activities for one day that simulate the work of a school principal while they are observed by trained assessors. Each participant receives an extensive (30-40 page) assessment report that is reviewed with him or her by the Center Director. The process is highly personalized with only six candidates assessed in each session. Six trained assessors are assigned to each session.
