Screening of “Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture”
Long Island University/C.W. Post Campus will be hosting a screening of “Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture” on Friday, December 10, 2010 (1- 4PM) in Humanities 119. The screening is sponsored by Continuing Education and Hutton House Lectures. After the screening, a public forum on the film will be moderated by Dr. Jeong-un Rhee and Dr. Arnold Dodge, faculty members in the College of Education and Information Sciences.
“Race to Nowhere” is a documentary produced by a concerned mother who turned herself into a filmmaker. Director Vicki Abeles turns the personal political, igniting a national conversation in her new documentary about the pressures faced by American schoolchildren and their teachers in a system and culture obsessed with the illusion of achievement, competition and the pressure to perform.
“Race to Nowhere” is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America.
Parents, teachers, administrators and concerned community members are invited to see the film and together ask:
1. How can we best support the youth of America today and prepare them to become healthy, bright, contributing, and leading citizens?
2. How do we define achievement?
3. How can we end the race to nowhere?

The event is free and open to the public. However, space is limited so please make your reservation in advance by sending an RSVP to arnold.dodge@liu.edu
