The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is testing an AI-powered scoring system to grade the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exams.
As a result of this test, the education agency plans to hire around 2,000 graders (vs the 6,000 graders they hired last year), which will save them $15–20M p/y.
The AI system was trained on 3,000 exam responses, but to ensure accuracy, answers that confuse it (eg. if they include slang), and 1/4 of AI-graded results will be re-scored by humans.
