School No. 1 is the home to a thriving dynamic multi-cultural community. Our student population has grown from 541 students in 2009 to our current enrollment of 618. This year, in School No. 1, we have added a fifth Kindergarten class and two pre-school classes. We celebrate our diversity at School No. 1 where 28 languages are spoken at home, and we support 75 students with ESL instruction. To best meet the needs of our growing population, our staff has also grown to a total of 88 staff members - 67 full time and 21 part time staff members. We have 50 full time teachers and 11 part time teachers.

At School No. 1 we truly believe that all students can learn and that it is our responsibility to meet the needs of all students so that they can find success. With the support of the Director of Special Services, School No. 1 has effectively implemented collaborative classrooms in all grade levels - with the exception of 4th grade for this year only. We also opened a second collaborative class in Kindergarten. These classes, with two teachers - a regular education teacher and a special education teacher - provide for the appropriate instructional support for all students in a least restrictive environment. Our teachers took the lead with this program and researched, developed, and implemented a training program for School No. 1 that began last Spring.  The communication continued throughout the summer with a followup session during the first days back at school. Collaborative efforts between these teachers are ongoing.
