Researchers said that academic pressure at age 15 was associated with higher rates of depression and self-harm through age 24. Data from 4,714 participants in the Children of the 90s initiative showed that teens who were overwhelmed by schoolwork at age 15 reported higher levels of depressive symptoms through at least age 22, according to the study in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health. Each one-point increase on a nine-point scale of academic pressure was linked to an 8% increase in the likelihood of student self-harm at age 15.
