There are differing opinions about how students should be assessed to gauge potential learning loss from the spring school closures, with some favoring quick tests instead of hours of extensive exams. Some, including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, are urging schools to consider "looping" teachers with their students to the next grade, while Eric Kalenze, a high-school English teacher, suggests teachers use formative assessments.
