My name is Nadia Jean-Francois, and I am the Education Equity Coordinator at ERASE Racism.  I am reaching out to let you know about a great leadership opportunity for students.

We have openings in our Student Task Force!  Students meet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties monthly (approximately) to plan and execute joint projects for our region and to identify and implement local projects in their school/community, in order to advance their goal of increasing racial equity and inclusion.

What have they done?

  • March 2019 Task Force members led workshops and were plenary speakers at Molloy College.  100 participantsOur members trained Long Island K-12 educators and Ed.D. students at Molloy College on the importance of implementing Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education in schools.  View photos here.
  • July 2019 - Task Force members led workshops and were plenary speakers at Teachers College, Columbia University: Reimagining Education Summer Institute. 500 U.S. and international educators. Members spoke about the need to include student voices in the learning process. To demonstrate culturally responsive curriculum in the classroom, they shared and discussed culturally responsive lesson plans on multiple topics, which they created.  View photos of the event here.
  • November 2019 Plenary speakers at our Long Island Leaders of Tomorrow Conference.  200 high school students.  Task Force members spoke to students in Nassau and Suffolk Counties about opportunities they've had to advocate for racial equity and inclusive learning through their participation on the Student Task Force.  For photos from Nassau click here, Suffolk click here.

  Agenda for 2019 - 2020 school year:

  • Creating a toolkit for students that helps them begin and sustain racial equity and inclusion clubs in school
  • Developing trainer resources for high school students to raise awareness about cultural sensitivity among students at various grade levels
  • Educating students about Long Island’s history: The connections between historical racial segregation in housing and schools, and today’s patterns of segregation. How do we respond?
  • Creating a toolkit to help address microaggressions and racial slurs in schools
  • Exploring ways to engage students on improving school climate

How do students join and what is the criteria for members?

We ask that you please share information about our Task Force with students who might be interested in joining this exciting effort.  Any student who is eager to make a difference to support racial equity and inclusion is welcome to join our Task Force.  If you would like to distribute flyers for our next meeting, kindly respond to this email with your name, address, and number of requested flyers.  If you would like to recommend students to our Task Force, please respond to this email with their name and contact information, or you can direct them to sign up here.

Thank you for aiding us in our effort to serve as allies to students that are passionate about effecting change in their communities.  We believe that their voices deserve to be heard, and every addition to our Task Force is essential to fostering a more equitable and inclusive school environment!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  You can also provide interested students with my contact information below.  I look forward to collaborating with you and your students in the future!
