A Network Connecting School Leaders From Around The Globe
In West Virginia, in August, we would see these fairly large caterpillars on the trees, half-covered by little white things. We thought the white things were eggs, put there by a wasp. Turns out that the eggs are injected earlier, and the white things are larvae emerging.
In any case, the baby wasps feed on the catapillar and finally kill it. The most grisly part of the story is that the wasp injects toxins so that the caterpillar cooperates in its destruction.
Charles Darwin thought this was a particularly horrible part of nature. But it's quite common. And I finally realized that there's a parallel here with K-12 education. The extreme parasite (I.e., our Education Establishment) is able to pervert an organization's original purpose, so we migrate 180-degrees from genuine education to a phony make-believe education that is in fact social engineering.
