Teaching Something Is Better Than Teaching Nothing

I’m going to do this very briefly but this is one of the biggest topics possible. It deserves a whole book.

I submit to you that Progressive education believes in teaching attitudes, opinions, and feelings. Progressive education does not give a damn if children learn a fact or not.

As you feel this opinion triumphing in one school after another, you will probably have a desolate feeling, a barren Antarctic feeling. A brain without any facts in it is a very sad and pathetic sort of hell.

Geography is practically a paradigm for basic knowledge that one should learn starting at a young age. Traditionally, you began with geographical details; they became the foundation for studying History. So the best way to sabotage everything was to sneer at geography and eliminate it as much as possible.

Simultaneously, the kids don't learn to read, not really. So they can’t pronounce geographical names. They can’t pronounce Thomas Jefferson.

What do they get instead? Oh, endless, soul-eroding mush. Apparently someone at the top of the Education Establishment gave the order: teach anything you want but don’t teach facts. Keep students busy with nothing. They will probably be restless and unhappy, so don't hold back on the Ritalin.
