Reflection: 17 years of learning

This summer will be my 17th year working in the education field.  As I reflect on my experience, many things come to mind.  There have been a series of truths that I have come to realize and have experienced as a result of my time as an educator and a school leader.  Other than the fact that I am 17 years older and growing gray hair, I feel as if I started teaching yesterday.  The freshness of evolution has kept me alive and motivated me to continue…

Views on the Vegara Decision on Teacher Rights

Vergara as a blank-slate opportunity
A system that benefits educators based solely on time put in and not performance leaves little room or incentive for teachers to grow, writes Jonas Chartock in The Hechinger Report. Educators and others across the country should seize the chance offered by the Vergara ruling to recreate policies that…

What’s Testing Season?

Recently, the editors of Edutopia were considering a theme for their bloggers to blog about concerning testing. In order to keep things timely, they needed to find out when most schools were being affected by standardized tests. It was a reasonable consideration, worthy of a responsible examination of the subject. It was the question posed to the bloggers however, that set me off about our evolved approach to these standardized tests. When is your Testing Season?

Every…

Perhaps new teacher evals aren't so bad

Perhaps new teacher evals aren't so bad
New York City public school teachers used to receive either a 'satisfactory' or 'unsatisfactory' rating, reports Beth Fertig for WNYC. In 2012, 97 percent were deemed satisfactory. Now, teachers are rated through a combination of classroom observations and student test scores, and teachers and principals say overall they appreciate the classroom-observation component -- it's just very complicated. Last year,…
