This is Why I Teach: Individual Moments Matter by Bill Ferriter

This is Why I Teach: Individual Moments Matter

Years ago, I was in my first season as the head coach of the boys basketball team at my middle school.  The girls coach came to me just before the last game and told me that our…

When done well, the evaluation process is open and fair, well communicated, and in the best of cases, leaves room for improvement before a final, summative evaluation takes place. There are hundreds of evaluations of students that take place during the learning process. Teachers observe students doing their work, effort, confidence, correct process, types of thinking, clarity, attitude, and…

Reading and Vision by Robert E. Slavonic

Reading and Vision

A few years ago, I was touring a ruined abbey in Scotland. In a small museum containing objects found in excavations of the site were a pair of eyeglasses worn by monks in the 13th century.

The relationship between vision and reading is not exactly news. Since most adults eventually need reading glasses, most people reading this blog probably have personal experience with the transformational impact they can have.

Are We Preparing Students for College, Career, and Incarceration?

Whoever said "Sunshine is the best disinfectant" should have added "if you have the courage to face what the sunshine reveals and do something about it."  Perhaps it is our lack of courage, or simply a desire to not face what isn't pretty, but the matter of how children of different races are handled still needs some sunshine shed upon it. …

Consensus in Action: I Understand. I Can Agree. I Will Support

"We'll just have to agree to disagree" a statement rife with dissent.  Considered a way to stand our own ground, it allows the conversation to stop, the wall between us to stand, and progress to be stifled. Anyone can take the lead in creating consensus as the mode of decision-making in an organization but the one with the true responsibility for making it a common practice is certainly the leader.  What is consensus, truly?  …

Let us Meditate upon the Mencken-Mitchell Manifesto

How many know about Richard Mitchell, one of the great figures in American education? He was known as the Underground Grammarian and is famous  as the author of books such as "The Graves of Academe."  In researching Mitchell for…
