I attended CUNY Hunter College's TTT (Training Tomorrow's Teachers) program and we had to spend as many hours in the classroom as we did coursework hours beginning in our freshman year. During the 3 years prior to student teaching we were place in elementary, middle and high school which gave us a full experience teaching all levels. Then, of course, we also had student teaching at our desired level. By that time, we were so comfortable in front of students and with the curriculum. TTT no more. Anonymous
The traditional education programs with student teaching are fine. It is the alternative paths such as Teach for America that assume this profession is easy enough that you can learn on the job. Most of these candidates are unprepared and unable to do justice to the students they serve because they lack the knowledge and practice needed to teach children successfully. m.berndt@oakcreek.k12.wi.us
