Survey comments from 2/10/18 - illegal absences from school condoned by parent excuse

Much has been written about parents allowing students to miss school for reasons that are not legal absences such as vacations, etc. In your school/district do you see this problem increasing, decreasing or remaining relatively the same?

Apathetic and affluenza...sad. anne.minton@pgtigers.org
This is so ridiculous. Especially since most districts refuse to educate the parents and taxpayers on Adam. The district doesn't lose funding for the student absent. Parents can do as THEY please when they take the family on vacation. Perhaps the administration in charge need to get a damn Life Anonymous
Many of our families go back to their home countries.
We have families sign off on a vacation form.
If they do not return on the date stated we take them off the register.

Parents choose how they write excuses based on the impact it would have on their child's education. Most are upfront and request work in advance as my HS is on the block schedule. Anonymous
The request is still made. “We are going away on vacation can you put together the work he will miss?” The answer from us is always no. We suggest they read and keep a journal of activities. Hopefully, our message is heard that being at school is important. Anonymous
I think with the mental health crisis, vacations etc. are important to a child’s and family’s well being. Many families have two working parents and often vacation schedules don’t follow the school calendar. I don’t see this as a problem. Anonymous
Our school system now counts vacations as unexcused absences whereas these absences used to be approved with prior notice of the absences. I fear that parents will be forced to lie that their children were sick rather than on vacation. No everyone can take a vacation during the summer. Vacation costs are less expensive when pre-planned and when taken at certain times of the year. Anonymous
