A Network Connecting School Leaders From Around The Globe
All things being equal, do you think it is better to hire a new Superintendent within the district or from the outside? (This question was polled back in 2014. Results will be compared.)
Answer | Respondent |

Hard as it depends on the quality and candidate pool in and out of the district, needs of the district and qualities of the candidates. | Anonymous |
The selection of a superintendent should be based on experience in education and qualifications to get the job made. If there is someone within the district that meets this requirement, its okay for them to be selected for the job. Although, I marked outside the district, where a candidate is from is not as important as having the experience and skill set for the job. | Anonymous |
Districts get very trapped in silos, and they may have more opportunities for inter-institutional innovations from outsiders than insiders. | Anonymous |
There are many benefits both tangible and intangible when hiring talent from within an organization. Given that there is a healthy culture within the organization, there are many benefits which would help to ease the transition for the entire school community. The internal candidate is known and has a proven track record of success. Trusting relationships are already established with all stakeholders. The individual can hit the ground running knowing the strengths and needs of the district. | Anonymous |
I think it really depends upon the experience of the candidates. I think it is very important for a Superintendent to have had some outside experience in another district at some point in his/her career. However, to hire from within can make a smooth transition. | Anonymous |
It really depends if the district is moving in a positive direction as the BOE sees it and wants it to continue with the same philosophy or do they see a need for a change in direction. | Anonymous |
Organizations can sometimes be guilty of perpetuating the status quo without even realizing it. If everything is even I would rather go out of the organization in most cases. | jnichols@vpaonline.org |
It depends who among the candidates is the most qualified. | Anonymous |
Sometimes a new perspective is necessary for progress | Anonymous |
Some new perspectives. In our small district, coaches, social studies or SpEd teachers tend to want the admin positions... | Anonymous |
I'd say within, but only if there is a qualified candidate. | Anonymous |
He or she knows the terrain and the unique and distinct characteristics of the district. | Anonymous |
Depends on the needs. | Anonymous |
They are already familiar with the district! | Anonymous |
