Comments from July 8, 2018 Poll on School Safety

Many school districts have taken steps to increase school security. How would you rate the present state of security in your school/district today?
Answer Respondent
950 students in a middle school with only 4 guards. The building has 4 floors as well. One guard has to be at the entrance/lobby at all times.   Anonymous
We are just getting a perimeter fence installed this summer. However, once inside the fence line, the main entrance to the school is not "hardened" at all--no entrance area near the main office that can be sealed if an attacker gets through the front door.   Anonymous
Our million dollar school re-design does facilitate collaborative teaching and learning but at the sacrifice of security. Students work in the hallways. Glass windows on inside walls of most classrooms encourage an open atmosphere. The school has several building communities. Our security consists of untrained, ordinary men and women. Multiple entrances are locked from the outside all day, but not monitored. Our students and staff are easy targets for a school shooter.   Anonymous
HS is the problem. Rest are much more secure.   Anonymous
It is not possible to prevent all potential dangers but we try to create a safe and secure environment without making schools prisons.   Anonymous
Many ways to improve were discussed right after a shooting but I never saw anything change. Regardless, I feel pretty safe   Anonymous
My districts are concentrating on increasing social- emotional and mental health supports for students. All of the metal detectors, locks, guns, sign-in procedures, security officers and police officers can't increase school safety as robustly as meeting the emotional needs of students.   Anonymous
Our school is literally attached to a police station.   Anonymous
