Comments from 8/10/19 - Poll Testing for Nicotine

Some districts are testing students for nicotine in their systems.  One district in Nebraska uses this test for students to continue to participate in extracurricular activities and athletics.  Do you agree with such testing?

Answer Respondent
Part of me says yes, for all students. But another part of me is against having freedoms taken away. It's a choice, even if it's a bad one. So I went with testing to participate in athletics and extracurriculars. Nicotine is harmful and really bad for the young with bodies still forming. Vaping is out of control right now. Anonymous
The testing part is not a problem; but students should e encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities and athletics, not taken away from them. Perhaps they would not engage in activities that would place nicotine in their system if they have enough extracurricular activities to participate in. Anonymous
I believe this is a violation of their personal rights. While not a healthy substance, nicotine is not against the law. Anonymous
So many things are unhealthy for students. Are we going to test for all of them? Alcohol, Nicotine, Cholesterol, Sugar. These are health choices all students must make. Age restrictions are already in place by law. Students caught smoking/vaping should lose privileges. This is enough. Anonymous
And, what else are we going to start looking for? Are the tests accurate enough to account for second-hand smoke? Anonymous
It's a violation of one's privacy. Anonymous
As long as they offer counseling and support services for those testing positive and there is a pathway back into extracurricular after testing positive - accepting support and working to get back on the right track Anonymous
This is an issue for parents. Anonymous
I have mixed feelings about this question. Why just nicotine? What about young students who may be living in homes where they are exposed to meth? What about students who may be abusing drugs and alcohol. Such information could be used for drug education, DCS/CPS, etc., to provide interventions for students. Anonymous
Unnecessarily invasive of privacy and humiliating. I am against our students constantly being made to feel like they are suspicious or criminal and that we are obsessed with trying to find them guilty of something. Anonymous
