I currently work as a Permanent Substitute Teacher in Bethpage Union Free School District at JFK Middle School. I hold a certification in Social Studies 7-12 and work as a literacy tutor for students in the Harborfields School District. In addition to acquiring an extension certificate to teach grades 5-6, I am matriculating credits for my Master's degree at LIU Post in Educational Technology.

As an alumni of Marist College, I graduated with Magna Cum Laude, a B.A. in History and Adolescent Education, minors in Spanish and Latin American Caribbean Studies, and concentration in Public History. A Dean's list student for six out of eight semesters, I am also a Kappa Delta Pi member and a Phi Alpha Theta member. I coordinated and designed an anti-bullying campaign with the Marist Teachers of Tomorrow Club and the Poughkeepsie City Middle School. I volunteered for three years with Marist's Campus Ministry group tutoring students in literacy as well as ESL. I am also a genuine advocate of participating and contributing to opportunities for professional development. For instance, I attended and presented at Phi Alpha Theta Conference and the New York State Annual Reading Association Conference two consecutive years. I consider the best professional development to be ongoing, experiential, collaborative, and connected to and derived from working with students and understanding their culture. For that reason, I stay up-to-date on new research on how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom, and new curriculum resources. With that said, I am registered to attend the ISTE Conference in TX, the NCSS Conference in CA, and Edcamp LI this upcoming school year.

While I have minimal experience at this time, I believe that my dynamic experiences in traditional and nontraditional classroom settings; in addition to my ambitious, reflective, and adaptive nature demonstrate why I would be a valuable asset to any district. PS: Check out my twitter @Ms_R_Martens
