My name is Kristianne Haran. I completed my graduate degree in school counseling at Queens College and I am currently working as a School Counselor Advocate for the Central Queen’s YM & YWHA at John Bowne High School.
As a School Counselor Advocate at Central Queens YM & YMHA at John Bowne High School, I facilitate individual, group and academic counseling sessions with a diverse population of students. I have built a positive rapport with my students and collaborate with both teachers and families to ensure each student’s needs are met. I have had the opportunity to develop and implement both social/emotional and educational programs for students at various academic levels. In addition to my role as a counselor, I am certified by the Princeton Review and instruct a College Edge course at Martin Van Buren High School. The goal of this course is to teach my students the value of a high school diploma as well as looking toward their future goals. I encourage and strengthen students engagement, promote higher attendance, reduce risk of retention and drop out, and increase the likelihood of graduation. My position in the classroom enables me to facilitate college and career readiness programs to students by providing them with workshops and skill development.
Prior to my current position, I interned at both the middle and high school level. My most recent internship, before graduation, was at Westbury High School. I assisted the Counseling Department in addressing the needs of the student population. Through this experience, I became proficient in the areas of scheduling, college guidance and career development. During my first internship at Roslyn Middle School, I worked with students at various academic levels. I led an 8th grade girls group, focusing on self-esteem. Through various activities and talk sessions students left the program with a positive self-image. These varied internship experiences helped me gain a deeper understanding of the academic, social, and emotional needs of students both at the middle and high school level. Lastly, in addition to my internship and occupational experiences, I volunteer at the Long Island Crisis Center/Suicide Hotline, where I have gained a skill set in crisis intervention. This experience has broadened my counseling knowledge base.
I am fully committed and determined to advocate for students and I believe that every student, if given the proper guidance, can find a path to their own personal success.
