I am the Special Education Coordinator at Evergreen Charter School. I work with families, students, teachers and administrators to make sure that we educate all of our students so they are full participants in our learning community. I am an educator and an enthusiastic life-long learner.
As a special education coordinator I work closely with families to educate them about the special education process in their district. I facilitate meetings between families and school staff so that pertinent information is discussed and presented for all stakeholders. I work closely with the Hempstead UFSD to ensure that all students, residing in Hempstead UFSD, that are parentally placed at Evergreen Charter School receive their mandated services. More importantly, I assist to facilitate an active dialogue between the service providers, teachers, student families and the district.
Another of my roles is to coordinate the Response to Intervention program at Evergreen Charter School. I work with a team that gathers periodic benchmark data, criterion-referenced and norm-referenced data that the Instruction Support Team requires to make informed decisions about intervention services. The team identify students performing significantly below grade level expectations to determine the specific academic need. From there we determine the program, intervention goal, frequency and intensity of service(s )that the student would receive during a 6-week cycle.
In addition to our RtI program, I also coordinate the school's Child Study program. Child Study allows teachers to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to discuss students with challenging behavioral or academic concerns. Child Study allows teachers to discuss students who are having challenges in a tier 1 classroom setting. Child Study provides valuable student information, which might otherwise be unnoticed, and collaboratively develop practical, evidence based tier 1 classroom interventions that can be tracked and assessed at follow up meetings.
As a special education coordinator I work with classroom teachers to understand the needs of their students with individualized education and section 504 plans. I collaborate with teachers to differentiate the general education content so that it is accessible for all learners. During the year I provide professional development that teachers have a need for in their daily instruction. This year teachers have received professional development in reciprocal teaching and Wilson Fundations. Professional development workshops include follow up sessions for areas that teachers require additional development.
