Hello All! My name is Samantha McElhaney John and I have been teaching for 19 years. A fun fact about me is that I'm an opera singer first who found herself, directing, coaching and eventually teaching music. I teach vocal music and am the musical theater director (K-8) at an all boys school in the Bronx. I'm from Maryland and have lived in NY for 7 years with my amazing husband and beautiful 6 year old daughter. I am the Chair for our specials department and a member of the instructional leadership team. I recently have acquired some administrative duties of an academic dean who is out on leave. I currently support grade team leaders by meeting weekly in order to ensure that they are kept up to date and that teacher leader development deliverables are being met.
As education leaders, we are bridge builders. We build, repair and maintain our schools in the way that we support relationships, manage conflicts and implement ministry and Board directives. It is the trust that staff and students have in leaders that gives them the confidence to travel over these bridges daily. Just like a bridge that is supported by tension, I know that effective management of tension is crucial to the success of a leader. Strong bridge builders and leaders listen to the concerns of others and regularly reflect on their practice and impact. As an educational leader, my vision is to move people forward and support them.
My vision and underlying philosophy is that education has the power to build relationships, create opportunities and change a person’s life trajectory. I am pursuing administration because l want to be able to utilize the human capital and resources available to me in a way that makes a tangible difference in the lives of students. I would describe my leadership style is affiliative as I strive to connect with my team and encourage collaboration amongst the team.
