There are many ways to get started in SL. A great way to learn about SL is to join SLED (SL for Educators)http://secondlife.com/education/ , Global Kids in NYC offers a number of F2F (face to face) professional development sessions, and ISTE offers podcasts and in world assistance with SL.
There are also many videos out there about SL. In addition to YouTube, we now have TeacherTube and SecondLife's video library at http://slcn.tv/ SLCN.tv contains video clips from recent best practice conference
