Talking About Race and Racism in the Classroom Using The New York Times

A Learning Network Webinar for Educators

Our students are living through history, from the protests following the killing of George Floyd while in police custody to the insurrection at the Capitol, all while dealing with a deadly pandemic that has disproportionately affected Black and brown communities. Though stories of police brutality and racial inequality are not new, the events of the last year have amplified the call to educators to create safe spaces for students to have critical conversations about race and racism. Navigating these conversations can be challenging. If you are struggling with where to start, or where to go next, you are not alone.

During this webinar, educators will share their experiences and advice on talking about race and racism in the classroom and discuss why these conversations matter. We will provide guidance on how to use authentic sources, from The Times and elsewhere, to make meaningful connections by grounding conversations in historical and current events, as well as students’ experiences. We hope you will walk away with practical strategies to prepare yourself and your students to engage critically with issues that are important to them and to the future of our society.
