The Alliance for Excellent Education leads the Future Ready Schools movement and has a special framework for Future Ready librarians that outlines their role in school transformation.

According to eSchool News, the Future Ready Librarians Framework came out of a growing recognition that librarians can play a critical role— especially if they get access to devices and training before teachers and participate in discussions about digital citizenship.

The framework says librarians should be curating digital resources and tools, empowering students as creators, building partnerships within instruction, and designing collaborative spaces, but often librarians are left out of the planning and execution of Future Ready work.

Dive Insight:

At a recent conference for Future Ready schools near Boston, administrators from Massachusetts and Rhode Island school districts explained how they were approaching the challenge of transforming their schools with an eye toward the future. Students need to be ready for a different world than previous generations were prepared for. While students do need to be trained to use and feel comfortable with digital devices, that is not the only thing to consider.

Besides exposing students to digital technology, schools need to build in lessons about digital citizenship, administrators need to engage teachers and other school leaders in the planning and execution process, and instructional goals need to be aligned with infrastructure capacity. Building Future Ready schools simply does not allow for silo mentalities within districts in IT and curriculum and instruction departments.

Data was collected through a national survey of more than 1,500 parents of children ages 2-10. The survey covered children's home use of television, DVDs, video games, tablets, and other electronic devices, and investigated how much of the media content was considered educational (media use for homework or other school assignments was excluded). Some key findings of the study were:

Fifty-four percent of respondents said their child "often" takes specific actions as a result of their exposure to educational media, such as talking about something they saw (38%), engaging in imaginative play based on it (34%), asking questions about it (26%), or asking to do a project or activity inspired by it (18%).

As children get older, the amount of time they spend with screen media goes up (from 1 hour and 37 minutes to 2 hours and 36 minutes a day), and the proportion that is considered educational goes down (from 78% to 27%).

Parents don't believe their children learn as much from educational media about science as they do about other subject areas.

The authors emphasize that no parent's estimate of his or her child's media use is likely to be exact. However, they say that when dealing with children aged 10 and under, time and frequency estimates from parents are more likely to be reliable than those obtained from the child.
