Mashable

On March 26, 2024, Florida enacted a groundbreaking law significantly limiting social media access for children, as reported by Amanda Yeo. Under this new legislation, dubbed House Bill 3 (HB 3), children under the age of 14 are prohibited from having social media accounts, while those aged 14 to 15 require parental consent to create or maintain one. This law represents a bold step in regulating the digital landscape to safeguard young users from the potential harms associated with social media usage.

Governor Ron DeSantis, who signed HB 3 into law, emphasized the legislation's role in empowering parents to protect their children more effectively. By setting these age restrictions, Florida aims to mitigate various adverse effects social media can have on minors, from exposure to inappropriate content to the psychological impacts of online engagement. The law is set to take effect from January 1, allowing a transition period for current underage users to adapt to the changes.

Social media platforms traditionally set the minimum age for account creation at 13, aligning with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). However, HB 3 raises the legal age limit to 14 within Florida, introducing penalties for platforms that fail to enforce these regulations. This legislation mandates that platforms prohibit account creation by children under 14 and delete existing accounts held by this age group. Additionally, platforms must terminate accounts if algorithmic analysis suggests a user is likely under the age threshold.

For 14- and 15-year-olds, social media use hinges on obtaining parental or guardian consent, a process that underscores the law's focus on parental rights and child safety. If consent is not granted or is later revoked, children in this age group are limited to communication methods like email and group chats until they reach the age of 16. Notably, HB 3 does not apply to platforms exclusively used for direct messaging, allowing continued use of email and similar services.

The responsibility for compliance with HB 3 lies with the social media companies, not the individual users. Platforms risk fines up to $50,000 per violation for non-compliance and may face lawsuits on behalf of children, with damages up to $10,000. Alongside social media regulations, HB 3 includes age verification requirements for pornographic websites, aligning with similar laws in other states aimed at protecting minors from exposure to harmful content online.

This legislation marks a significant development in the ongoing discussion about the role and regulation of technology in the lives of young people, highlighting the challenges and responsibilities of balancing digital freedoms with safeguarding minors.

The Morgan Library & Museum in New York has made a significant contribution to the accessibility of art history by digitizing almost 500 images from its exceptional collection of Rembrandt etchings. This initiative brings to light the Dutch master, Rembrandt van Rijn's, unparalleled skill and creativity as an artist and storyteller through the medium of etching. Rembrandt, a 17th-century painter known for his portraits, still lifes, landscapes, mythological scenes, and Biblical subjects, has become synonymous with artistic excellence, influencing not just the art world but also permeating popular culture.

Art historian Alison McQueen highlights the widespread veneration of Rembrandt, noting the artist's name's commercial use and its representation of supreme craftsmanship. Despite his historical financial struggles, Rembrandt's legacy has transcended time, with his name evoking a mark of quality and skill. His etchings, alongside his paintings, underscore his dramatic intensity, deep psychological insight, and touching humanity. The collection at the Morgan showcases a variety of themes, including self-portraits, portraits of others (like the 1633 portrait of his mother), religious scenes (such as the 1655 "Abraham's Sacrifice"), and landscapes (like "The Three Trees" from 1643), alongside more domestic subjects like the 1640 "Sleeping Puppy."

The digitalization of these artworks provides an invaluable resource for art enthusiasts, students, and scholars worldwide, offering a closer look at Rembrandt's intricate etchings without the need to travel. These digitized collections, alongside those from the National Gallery of Art, the National Gallery in London, and the Dutch Rijksmuseum, enable a broader appreciation and understanding of Rembrandt's work, ensuring his continued relevance and admiration in the digital age.

This effort by the Morgan Library & Museum not only preserves Rembrandt's legacy but also democratizes access to his remarkable works, allowing anyone with internet access to explore the depth and breadth of one of the most celebrated artists in European history.

Newsweek

Florida is actively seeking ways to address its teacher shortage by proposing legislation to make it easier for retired teachers to re-enter the workforce. Senate Bill 1482, if passed, would remove the current six-month waiting period required for retired teachers and school personnel who wish to return to teaching after retiring through the Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP). This program allows educators to accumulate retirement benefits in a trust fund while they continue working. The bill, effective from July 1, 2024, aims to provide a short-term solution to the staffing crisis in schools, exacerbated by the state's population growth.

The teacher shortage in Florida is significant, with the Florida Education Association reporting 4,096 instructional vacancies and 3,457 support staff vacancies as of the middle of the current school year. This situation potentially affects hundreds of thousands of students who may lack access to full-time teachers. The shortage is not new, with various factors contributing to the difficulty in recruiting new teachers and retaining existing ones. Criticism has been directed at Governor Ron DeSantis, with claims that despite investments in education, Florida ranks poorly in teacher salaries and per-student spending nationally.

The proposed legislation represents a focused effort to alleviate the immediate challenges facing Florida's education system by leveraging the experience of retired educators. By removing bureaucratic barriers, the state hopes to replenish its teaching ranks and improve educational outcomes for its growing student population.

A blue-ribbon commission recommended this week that schools in New York State reduce the use Regents and other exams to meet high school graduation requirements.

The 12 recommendations contained in the report included recommendations on ways to demonstrate student learning, such as capstone projects, and performance-based assessments, instead of Regents exams. The commission also recommended more access to career and technical education, and more matching of standards to career and college expectations.

New York State United Teachers said, said, “The recommendations from SED’s Blue Ribbon Commission promise a bright future for our students and a positive outlook for New York as an innovator and global economic leader. The recommendations recognize what educators know so well: That each of our students is a unique learner with talents, skills and aspirations that should be fully explored and nurtured on their way to graduation. These proposals would help create young adults who are not just ready for the careers and challenges of today’s dynamic economy but who are lifelong learners and knowledgeable, engaged citizens.”

State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa called the report “a blueprint,” adding, “The real work starts with the design.”

If so, it’s time to recognize them for their hard work and dedication. The NJHS Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) offers a remarkable opportunity for students to celebrate their accomplishments and further their educational aspirations, with the top 500 being awarded a $500 college savings plan. But the January 24 application deadline is fast approaching.

To help inspire your students to reflect on their leadership and apply for this award, we’ve gathered testimonials from five students who applied for and received the OAA last year. Take their word for it: This is an opportunity you don’t want your students to miss.
