SUMMARY:INSTRUCTIONAL ROUNDS: An Introduction to the Collaborative Pro
 cess for Achieving School Improvement
DESCRIPTION:The Instructional Rounds process was developed by Richard
Elmore, Professor of Educational Leadership at Harvard Graduate Schoo
l of Education. Inspired by the medical-rounds model used by physician
s, Elmore and his colleagues have pioneered this highly effective form
of professional learning to develop a shared practice of observing,
discussing and analyzing teaching and learning. Dr. Elmore suggests th
at this process is specifically designed to help move school improveme
nt efforts to the next level by maintaining commitment, monitoring pro
gress, and holding everyone accountable.\nPresenting the one-day works
hop will be an exceptional educator and expert in the impelementation
of the Rounds process. Thomas Fowler-Finn, former superintendent of th
e Cambridge, MA public schools, worked closely with Richard Elmore for
several years to implement Instructional Rounds in Cambridge, and he
consults extensively on the process in the United States and abroad. H
e will lead participants through the concept and process of Instructio
nal Rounds, the principles of the instructional core, supporting resear
ch, and how IR is used to improve learning and develop instructional l
eadership within a school district. \nDistrict teams of administrator
s, teacher leaders and classroom teachers are encouraged to attend. E
nrollment will be limited to approximately 50 participants, and early
registration is encouraged. (Registration deadline: October 18, 2011)
