SUMMARY:Build the P-12 Foundation for College and Career Readiness: Us
e Lexile Measures to Implement the Common Core State Standards
DESCRIPTION:The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Initiative advocate
s standards that require students to read and understand increasingly
complex text at each grade level in order to develop the skills they n
eed for success in school and life. Education Secretary Arne Duncan ha
s said that the \"Holy Grail\" of education is to ensure that students
graduate from high school “college and career ready” (CCR).  \n
\nThis session, sponsored by ES BOCES and Molloy College, will provi
de an opportunity to explore important aspects of the ELA CCSS in rela
tion to text complexity. CCSS incorporate the use of Lexile measures t
o gauge the increasingly sophisticated levels of text required through
out a student's educational career. Participants will have an opportun
ity to discuss the use of Lexile measures, common in NYS schools, to:\
 n\ndifferentiate classroom instruction;\ntarget instructional resource
s and materials; and,\nmonitor student progress and track growth towar
d college and career readiness.\n\n \nParticipants will leave with pr
actical recommendations for systemic change and access to free online
resources, built upon the work of researchers such as Dr. James S. Kim
(Harvard Graduate School of Education), Dr. Richard Allington (Univer
sity of Tennessee, Knoxville), and Dr. K. Anders Ericson (Conradi Emin
ent Scholar, Florida State University) for immediate use.\n \nIntende
